Biography
Julian Kerkhoff is a German artist living and working in Munich. In 2017 he earned a Master’s degree in architecture from Technical University of Munich (TUM), which continues to inform his artistic practice.
Drawing from fundamental concepts of architecture such as scale, proportion and “Verortung” (roughly translated as “locating in time, place and culture”), he constructs mirror-like abstract paintings from synthetic resin, plaster reliefs of collected plants and interlocking wooden installations.
Since the earliest architecture humans have sought to separate themselves from nature while simultaneously seeking to remain connected to it. In his artworks he employs contrasting materials and techniques (physical-digital, natural-synthetic, manual-machine) to explore this complicated relationship of humans to their environment.
His works have been on display in both institutional and gallery contexts, including ‘Pinakothek der Moderne’ in Munich, ‘Salon der Gegenwart’ in Hamburg, UniCredit HVB Art Collection in Munich and ‘Kunstraum Potsdam’. Since 2019 he has been awarded studio space at the DomagkAteliers, supported by the city of Munich.
